Who are we?
SAGE is comprised of high school students at Shawnee High School in Medford, New Jersey that have a passion for various forms of art. We are instrumentalists, singers, painters, sketchers, drawers...and we hope that this list continues to grow. We are a group of young people cultivating a common goal of sharing our creativity with the elders in our community, so that we might be able to play a role in helping these people have a more fulfilling day.
Who do we serve?
SAGE currently partners with eldercare residential assistance facilities. Our students volunteer their talents and provide great musical performances, participatory art lessons and other forms of artistic outreach for the residents of these facilities. While we have concentrated thus far on serving the elderly, SAGE would love to get involved in partnering with any group that believes that performances from student artists might provide an uplifting experience for their respective patrons. So, what's SAGE's origin story?
SAGE's origins are traced to Gavin Oh, a budding teenage multi-instrumentalist. When Gavin was a freshman in high school, he put pen to paper and set about to design the best way he could practicably meld his love of performing music (piano and drums) with his professional ambitions involving neuroscience.
As he was becoming increasingly aware of the growing field of neurologic music therapy (particularly with respect to its benefits with elderly individuals and others with certain neurologic conditions), he knew that he wanted to begin his professional journey by utilizing his artistic talents in what would ultimately become SAGE.
Where does SAGE go from here?
SAGE continues in its course of development...it started as an idea which led to hours and hours of research and planning. It went from engaging in initial outreach to learning and executing administrative business tasks. Performances evolved from a solo artist playing piano pieces at facilities to several student artists presenting their talents in a whole different array of arts. Now, SAGE is an officially recognized organization with a group of teammates working to ensure that SAGE becomes a self-functioning unit that is equipped to thrive in the years to come.
